Kanbam

Dr. Shravan Kambam at the Cancer Center at Saint Michael’s Medical Center.

Radiation Oncology or radiation therapy, as it is also known, is the use of high energy particles to damage cancer cells DNA and eliminate their ability to further divide and grow.

This therapy is delivered using a linear accelerator, which uses electrons to produce x-rays or gamma rays to deliver a radiation beam to the affected part of the body.

Through state-of-the-art technology and treatment options, the Cancer Center at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark meets the standard of care needed to treat patients with cancers of all types, including prostate, breast, lung, rectal as well as less common cancers or metastatic bone or brain lesions.

Radiation can damage normal cells, thus making it important that the radiation is targeted to affected cells only. Our highly advanced cancer care technology for various radiation treatments listed below allow our team to focus directly on the affected areas of the body:

  • Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator
  • Varian 21 EX linear accelerator
  • State-of-the-art system for intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic radiosurgery/body radiotherapy (SRS/SBRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
  • Dedicated CT simulator
  • Computer-based external beam planning systems capable of IMRT/SRS/SBRT/IGRT, which focuses radiation to target the geometric shapes of tumors, thus sparing healthy tissue

Radiation therapy may be an isolated treatment or provided in combination with chemotherapy. Our oncologists at Saint Michael’s collaborate to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for our patients. We have a highly skilled team of oncologists, physicians, and technicians providing quality care.

Saint Michael’s offers a range of options for our patients in a safe and clean setting in the heart of Newark.
