Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, a member of Prime Healthcare, earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a patient safety ratings organization.
Saint Michael’s is the only hospital in Newark and Essex County to receive an A grade from Leapfrog, which assigns grades to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
This is the sixth time since 2020 that Saint Michael’s has received the highest grade for patient safety from Leapfrog.
“As a hospital committed to excellence in patient care, we are immensely proud to receive an ‘A’ grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to our exceptional doctors and staff whose tireless dedication and commitment to excellence have played a pivotal role in achieving this remarkable grade for patient safety,” Dr. Sickles said. “This recognition underscores their unwavering efforts to ensure the well-being and trust of every patient we serve.”
Over the last year, 81 percent of Prime’s hospitals earned an “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group.

In March, Saint Michael’s was recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, placing in the top 10% of all hospitals nationwide for patient safety.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
