The attending faculty doctors at Saint Michael’s Medical Center squeaked by the hospital’s residents 7-6 in the annual soccer match that has become a cherished and much anticipated tradition.

The matchup at Riverbank Park in Newark’s Ironbound neigbhorhood on June 6 drew more than two dozen doctors.

The friendly match is intended to foster camaraderie and collegiality between the faculty attendings and the medical trainees, said Dr. Hamid Shaaban, Saint Michael’s chief medical officer.

Saint Michael’s is a teaching hospital affiliated with New York Medical College. Every year, about 20 newly graduated doctors join the hospital for a three-year residency. In addition, the hospital hosts another 18 fellows in a variety of medical specialities.
