What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Pulmonary Fibrosis is a lung disease that causes inflammation, scarring, thickening and stiffening of the lung’s tissue, about 5 million people worldwide are affected. This thickened, stiff tissue makes it more difficult for the lungs to work properly.
What causes Pulmonary Fibrosis?
There are many different factors that could cause pulmonary fibrosis in a person. These include but are not limited to:
- Silica dust
- Asbestos
- Coal dust
- Grain dust
- Certain medications (i.e. Chemotherapy, heart medications)
- Radiation treatment
- Sarcoidosis
- Scleroderma
- Genetics

How do we Diagnose Pulmonary Fibrosis?
- PFT
- Spirometry
- Bronchoscopy
- Cat Scan
- Lung biopsy
How do we treat Pulmonary Fibrosis?
The lung damage caused by pulmonary fibrosis can’t be repaired, but medications and therapies can sometimes help ease symptoms and improve quality of life. For some people, a lung transplant might be appropriate.
