Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, announced today that it has achieved numerous accolades for clinical excellence from Healthgrades, the #1 site Americans use when searching for a doctor or hospital.
Among Saint Michael’s distinctions are the Coronary Intervention Excellence Award Specialty Excellence Awards, placing the hospital among the nation’s top 10% for coronary interventional procedures for the fourth year in a row.
Saint Michael’s was also rated five stars for four services, including coronary interventional procedures, the treatment of heart failure, gallbladder removal surgery and the treatment of diabetic emergencies.
“We are incredibly honored to receive the Healthgrades Coronary Intervention Excellence Award for four years running,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication, expertise, and compassion of our entire team. Achieving five-star ratings in four services further reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering the highest level of care to our patients. We are proud to continue setting the standard for excellence in healthcare and remain focused on improving the health and well-being of our community.”
Saint Michale’s achievements are based solely on what matters most: patient outcomes. As part of its 2025 hospital assessment, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for over 30 of the most common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine the top performers in specialty care. By offering easy access to objective performance measures, Healthgrades helps consumers find and select a hospital that excels in providing the care they need.
As variation in performance among hospitals continues to grow, it is increasingly important for consumers to seek care at top-rated programs. Healthgrades’ 2025 analysis revealed that if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to five-star hospitals during the 2021-2023 study period, on average, 224,958 lives could potentially have been saved and 141,692 complications could potentially have been avoided.*
“Healthgrades commends Saint Michael’s for their clear commitment to delivering consistently superior patient outcomes in critical service areas, including for coronary interventional procedures,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “Saint Michael’s leadership, expertise, and unwavering dedication to clinical excellence set a high mark for specialty care in New Jersey and nationwide.”
The Healthgrades awards are just the latest accolades earned by the Newark hospital.
Earlier this year, Saint Michael’s was recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient by Healthgrades, placing in the top 10% of all hospitals nationwide for patient safety. Saint Michael’s also earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade in the spring from The Leapfrog Group, a patient safety ratings organization. Saint Michael’s is the only hospital in Newark and Essex County to receive an A grade from Leapfrog.
Saint Michael’s has also been recognized by the Lown Institute for outstanding social responsibility, receiving an “A” grade on the 2024-25 Lown Institute Hospitals Index.
