Dr. Tyrone Krause was appointed chief of cardio-thoracic surgery at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark.
Saint Michale’s Medical Center announced that it has appointed an accomplished heart surgeon with more than three decades of experience as its chief of cardio-thoracic surgery.
Tyrone James Krause, MD, assumed the role at both Saint Michaels and St. Mary’s Hospital at the first of the year.
Dr. Krause returns to Saint Michael’s after serving as the Chief of Surgery at Jersey City Medical Center from 2012 to February 2024. He will take over the duties from Nilesh Patel, MD, who has served as chief for more than 12 years.
Dr. Krause has performed more than 12,000 cardiac surgeries and has consistently maintained a mortality rate for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgeries well below the New Jersey state average. His innovative contributions include the development of a blood conservation program, an atrial fibrillation protocol, early extubating times, and reduced length of stay for patients, all of which have significantly improved outcomes for his patients.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Krause back to the medical center,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD. “Dr. Krause’s decades of expertise, innovative approach and proven leadership will greatly enhance the exceptional care we provide to our patients.”
In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Krause has served as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves Medical Corps, demonstrating his dedication and leadership in both civilian and military medical fields. In 2020, Dr. Krause was deployed by the U.S. Navy Covid-19 Response team to serve as intensivist at Elmhurst Hospital, NY, the epicenter of the epidemic.
Dr. Krause is a graduate of New York Medical College. He completed his general surgery training at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, N.Y., and UMDNJ in New Brunswick. He did his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center.
