NEWARK, N.J., May 21, 2026 – Saint Michael’s Medical Center has again been recognized among the nation’s top-performing hospitals, earning a four-star overall hospital quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the second consecutive ratings cycle.
Saint Michael’s is the only hospital in Newark and one of only two hospitals in Essex County to receive a four-star rating from CMS, which evaluates hospitals nationwide on quality measures including patient outcomes, safety and patient experience.
The recognition adds to a growing list of honors earned by Saint Michael’s, including five consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group, reflecting the hospital’s ongoing commitment to patient safety and quality care.
“This recognition reflects the extraordinary work our physicians, nurses and staff do every day to provide high-quality care to the communities we serve,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD. “Earning a second consecutive four-star CMS rating demonstrates the culture of accountability, compassion and clinical excellence that defines Saint Michael’s. We are proud to be Newark’s only hospital to achieve this distinction.”
CMS star ratings are updated periodically and are designed to help patients and families compare hospitals based on a range of measures related to quality, safety and patient experience. Hospitals ratings can be viewed on the CMS Care Compare website.
Since joining Prime Healthcare more than a decade ago, Saint Michael’s has continued to expand services, invest in technology and improve quality outcomes while strengthening access to care in Newark and throughout the region.
