Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.
Saint Michael’s has earned an A from Leapfrog for the last three consecutive periods and six of the last seven periods. It is also the only hospital in Newark to earn an A.
“We are incredibly proud to have earned an A from The Leapfrog Group for patient safety,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD. “This achievement is a direct reflection of the dedication, expertise, and compassion our entire team brings to work every single day. Our staff’s unwavering commitment to providing the highest standard of care ensures that our patients receive safe, effective treatment, and this recognition belongs to each and every one of them.”
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Saint Michael’s, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
Leapfrog named Saint Michael’s one of America’s Top Teaching Hospitals in 2024, one of only 75 in the country and four in New Jersey to receive the accolade. Saint Michael’s has also been recognized for clinical excellence from Healthgrades. Among the distinctions are the Coronary Intervention Specialty Excellence Awards, placing the hospital among the nation’s top 10% for coronary interventional procedures for four years in a row.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
