Saint Michael’s Medical Center was awarded an A by the Leapfrog Group for the third period in a row.

Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

This national distinction recognizes Saint Michael’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.

Saint Michael’s is the only hospital in Newark and one of only two in Essex County to receive an A. This is the third period in a row that Saint Michael’s has received the top grade from Leapfrog and seventh time since 2018.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But this hospital received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers, and clinicians who together made that possible.”

The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. Seventy-five percent of Prime Healthcare’s 45 hospitals across the country currently hold an “A” grade.

“We are extremely proud of our staff for putting patient’s safety first,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD. “We have created a culture of safety by employing the latest monitoring technology, verifying all medical procedures, ensuring that patients understand their treatment and encouraging our employees to follow proper handwashing procedures. Following these steps ensures that patients receive the safest care possible.”

Saint Michael’s also recently received a Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, placing the hospital among the top 5% of all short-term acute care hospitals in the nation.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
