NEWARK, NJ – November 16, 2022 – Saint Michael’s Medical Center received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national distinction recognizes the Newark hospital’s achievements in protecting hospital patients from preventable harm and errors.

Saint Michael’s, a member of Prime Healthcare, is the only hospital in Essex County to receive an A from Leapfrog. It was the sixth A awarded to the hospital since 2018.

“I applaud the hospital leadership and workforce for their strong commitment to safety and transparency,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is a sign that hospitals are continuously evaluating their performance, so that they can best protect patients. The Saint Michael’s team should be extremely proud of their dedication and achievement.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization with a 10-year history of assigning letter grades to general hospitals throughout the United States, based on a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors and harm to patients.

“We’re extremely proud to have received another A grade from Leapfrog,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Dr. Alan Sickles. “An award for patient safety and for quality care means a lot to us here at Saint Michael’s. It’s evidence that we place the people in our community, the patients, and our staff at the top of everything we do.”

Saint Michael’s was recently named to the 2022 Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list – the only hospital in New Jersey that earned the national honor.

Saint Michael’s has also received the Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades for each of the past four years. The distinction places Saint Michael’s among the top 5% of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting patients and providers.

“The population that we serve has significant chronic illnesses and therefore we have to provide evidence-based care that surpasses expectations and results in positive patient outcomes,” said Joy Mitchell, the director of Quality Improvement at Saint Michael’s.

Prime Healthcare’s two other New Jersey hospitals – Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital – also received grades of A from Leapfrog.

The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.
