Saint Michael’s Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
Saint Michael’s has earned an A grade from Leapfrog for five of the last six periods. Saint Michael’s is the only hospital in Newark and the only one in Essex County to earn an A from Leapfrog during this reporting period.
“Earning an ‘A’ from the Leapfrog Group for patient safety is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our entire team to providing the highest standard of care,” said Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles, MD. “This recognition reflects our dedication to creating a safe, healing environment for every patient, every day. We are proud of this achievement and will continue to prioritize safety, quality, and excellence in all that we do.”
Over the last year, 85 percent of Prime hospitals earned “A” ratings from The Leapfrog Group.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Saint Michael’s,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Saint Michael’s, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
This year, Saint Michael’s also received recognition from Healthgrades, which bestowed the hospital with its 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing in the t10% of all hospitals nationwide for patient safety.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
