Gynecology Services
As a major part of our commitment to women’s health services, Saint Michael’s Medical Center offers compassionate gynecology services for women at all stages of life. Our board-certified gynecologists and team of women’s health professionals are dedicated to our mission of preventing medical issues, detecting disease early, and educating and supporting our patients with dignity and respect.
During your visit, your gynecologist will discuss your overall and gynecologic health with you, within an open and honest conversation that is respectful of your life choices. She will share advice and recommendations for balancing your own medical needs with your work, family, and home responsibilities.

Preventive Medicine
During your appointment, your gynecologist will review your personal and family health history to understand if there are any medical conditions that may affect your own health. She may also ask you about any symptoms you may be having, such as vaginal discharge or bleeding, and if you are concerned about anxiety or stress, if you feel safe at home, and if you smoke, vape, use drugs, or drink alcohol. Your gynecologist may also review your vaccine status and advise you about the HPV and flu vaccines.
At the heart of our gynecology services are screening tests and regularly scheduled check-ups that can help identify potential medical issues early, when they are most treatable.
Our gynecologists provide the following exams and screenings:
- a pelvic exam to check if pelvic organs and structures are normal by feeling their shape and size
- a breast exam to check for lumps or other abnormalities by feeling and looking at the breasts
- a cervical exam, which includes:
- a Pap test, in which a small amount of tissue cells are removed and examined in a lab for cervical cancer or pre-cancer
- an HPV test, in which cells are removed and examined in a lab for human papillomavirus, which has been linked to cervical cancer and five other cancers
Your gynecologist may also recommend a urinalysis and/or blood tests during your visit.
Gynecologic Procedures
If you require one or more of these procedures, it will be performed in the office or the hospital:
- a colposcopy, which uses a magnifying device called a colposcope to detect visually if there are any abnormalities in your cervix or vagina. Biopsies or tissue samples may be taken. Your doctor will discuss the results with you.
- endometrial biopsy, during which a sample of tissue from the lining of the uterus is removed for examination
- hysteroscopy, a procedure using a lighted scope to view your cervix and the cavity/inside of your uterus
- laparoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure used to examine your reproductive organs and other abdominal organs and structures
- hysterectomy, surgical removal of the uterus and sometimes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix as well
- myomectomy, a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids
- D&C (dilation and curettage), a procedure to remove tissue from inside the uterine lining to diagnose and/or treat a number of conditions
