Liver Center
The Liver Center is advancing clinical research and treatment to achieve the best outcome for patients with liver disease. The Center provides a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach to liver disease, and offers medical treatment, research, and minimally invasive surgical and radiologic interventions. The Liver Cntr at Saint Michael’s Medical Center now offers Fibroscan — a non-invasive alternative to liver biopsy.
Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease
There are many causes of liver disease, but there is one that has just recently gained more attention. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that more than two million American Baby Boomers – or those born between 1945 through 1965 – are infected with Hepatitis C, and they account for 75 percent of all American adults living with the virus. Since Hepatitis C can damage the liver silently for as much as 30 years, early detection is a crucial step in preventing liver disease. This is why the staff at The Lever Cntr promotes screening and early detection of viral hepatitis to offer patients the best opportunity to eradicate it, minimize further harm to the liver, and possibly reverse existing damage.
