About the In the Pink Program

The In the Pink Cancer Screening and Early Detection Program is a Newark-based program serving ethnic minority, disadvantage female residents (i.e., African America/Latino) living in or near Essex County. Activities support increasing early detection of cancer. Breast cancer screenings are done two days weekly. We will continued to seek and new forge partnerships with Homeless, Women Half Way Houses, Family Success Centers, Catholic Charities, food pantries and soup kitchens in the Essex, Newark area.

All women who are eligible for a mammogram and diagnostic breast imagining are sent to the Connie Dwyer Breast Center at SMMC. We screened greater than 750 women in the 1st half of 2015 off which, 400 are women ages between 50-64, and greater than 350 are women less than 50 years of age who received a mammogram for the first time.

Through our partnership with the Women’s Health Outreach, Save Latin America, Goals for Life, Local FQHC and referrals from the local Planned Parenthood we recruited, educated and screened women ages 40 and younger for breast cancer.

Our target population is focused geographically on the Greater Essex County-Newark area, and specifically on the population that frequent Saint Michaels Medical Center. Our goal is to use the best practices outreaching strategies to recruit and prevent cancer through screening and rescreening of minority, medically under-served with no insurance.
