Extracurricular Activities & Events
Resident wellness is critical to ensuring a healthy work-life balance throughout residency training. Here at Saint Michael’s we recognize the need to maintain that balance and work hard to schedule wellness activities and provide mentorship to enhance our residents’ lives. The wellness committee, run by the residents, is dedicated to organizing such events to help residents stay physically and emotionally healthy.
Additionally, graduate medical education (GME) hosts other annual events focused on building camaraderie between the residents and attendings. These include a summer party welcoming the new housestaff, special lunches arranged by the attendings for resident appreciation and senior graduation party. The resident wellness committee has also sponsored events like Iftar party, movie screening, monthly birthday celebrations and food fests.
At Saint Michael’s we believe in helping each other. Each intern is paired with a resident mentor and a faculty advisor in his or her first year of training. These mentors oversee the resident’s professional and personal development, checks in with the resident regularly, offers guidance when needed, and also serves as confidants. Our residents develop meaningful connections with their mentors that extend beyond the walls of our hospital. The resident buddy system also allows a unique bond to be formed between the mentee and the mentor.
Our Program Director and Associate Program Director are a constant source of support for our residents. In addition to their accessibility to all residents on a daily basis, they conduct meetings with each resident. These meetings not only involve reviewing evaluations and discussing overall residency milestones but also, provide the resident with an opportunity for self-reflection.
