Program Director’s Welcome
Program Director’s Welcome
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship
Welcome to the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Saint Michael’s Medical Center. It is my privilege to introduce you to a program deeply rooted in clinical excellence, academic rigor, and compassionate care for the diverse and vibrant community of Newark and the greater Essex County region.
Our fellowship is built upon a mission to train the next generation of pulmonary and critical care physicians who not only excel in advanced medical knowledge and procedural skill, but who also lead with empathy, integrity, and a strong sense of social responsibility. At Saint Michael’s, fellows experience a rich and immersive learning environment that spans the full spectrum of pulmonary and critical illness—from complex ICU management and advanced ventilator strategies to lung cancer screening, interventional pulmonology, and chronic disease care.
What truly distinguishes our program is our commitment to addressing the social determinants of health that profoundly influence patient outcomes. Our patients face challenges that extend beyond the walls of the hospital—economic hardship, housing insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and environmental exposures that contribute to respiratory disease. Fellows are trained to recognize these determinants and to integrate this understanding into patient-centered care, advocacy, and research.
Serving an underserved urban population is both our duty and our privilege. Our fellows work alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality care to patients who might otherwise face barriers to specialty access. Through community outreach initiatives, population health projects, and quality improvement efforts, fellows gain not only clinical expertise but also the perspective necessary to effect meaningful change in the communities they serve.
We take pride in fostering an inclusive environment that values diversity of background and thought. Our graduates emerge as well-rounded physician-leaders—equipped to advance pulmonary and critical care medicine and to champion health equity wherever their careers lead.
Thank you for considering Saint Michael’s Medical Center. We invite you to join us in this mission of healing, learning, and service to those who need it most.
Warm regards,
Nirav Mistry, MD
