About Our Program
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a prestigious 3-year program designed to cultivate the next generation of exceptional pulmonologists and intensivists. Located in vibrant Newark, New Jersey, our fellowship offers a comprehensive clinical experience in the multifaceted practice of pulmonary and critical care medicine.
For more than 50 years, this fellowship has been an integral part of patient care in Newark at Saint Michael’s Medical Center (St. Michael’s). Now, the addition of St. Mary’s medical Center has provided the opportunity to make a bigger impact.
Our Fellowship program has twelve ACGME accredited positions and attracts. As fellows, they will provide patient care at St. Michael’s and St. Mary’s for most of their training. While some training will be undertaken at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY and John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, NJ.
We encourage our fellows to follow their passion, as well as inspire them to research in the area which fascinates them. They see a wide variety of patient population and pathology with plenty of opportunity to do research. They present at various conferences as well as publish in multiple journals.

**Electives: any of the above rotations and also Pulmonary Hypertension, Sleep Medicine, Interventional Pulmonary, Tuberculosis, Pulmonary fibrosis,
MICU/Mixed intensive Care Units
- Fellows learn how to evaluate patients requiring high level care as well manage critically ill patients with variety of complex pathology
- Fellows are taught how to place various higher level procedures such as
- Single Lumen introducer catheters,
- Non-tunneled double lumen dialysis catheters
- Triple Lumen Catheters
- Arterial Line insertion
- Endotracheal intubation
- Lumbar Punctures
- Bedside Bronchoscopies
Pulmonary Consult
- Fellows aid internal medicine specialists in managing classis pulmonary pathologies such as COPD, Asthma, Lung cancer, as well as evaluate patient’s for risk of post operative pulmonary complications for patients undergoing surgery
- They also learn to perform Thoracentesis, Bronchoscopies, Broncho-alveolar lavage, Biopsy, Pleurodesis, Pleur-X Catheter Placement, Tracheostomy change,
NeuroCritical Care
- Fellows round at a very busy neurocritical care intensive care unit at Westchester medical center where they learn how to manage acute strokes, intracerebral hemorrhages and post-op neurosurgical patients.
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit
- Fellows learn how to manage patient post op Coronary artery Bypass graft patients, Video-assisted thoracoscopy patients and post – op Valve replacement patients.
Schedules
Pulmonary Consults
- Mon – XRay rounds at 1pm, then floor rounds after.
- Tues – 7:30 – 9 AM report, Floor rounds from 9 – 11, 11 to 1 break usually 1pm board review questions
- Wed – Pulm clinic 9a, see pts and try to get notes done during clinic. Then floor rounds after clinic
- Thurs –see consults from 8 -11, CHEST board review at 11, grand rounds 12 – 1 , imaging rounds 1 – 3, Floor rounds after wards
- Fri –See consults from 9 – 12 and rounds around 12
Intensive Care Unit Daily Schedule
- 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM – Sign-Outs
- 8:30 AM – 12 PM – Morning Rounds
- 12 PM – 1 PM: Lunch / Complete any pending procedure / Notes
- 1 PM – 3 PM: Imaging Rounds on Mondays and Fridays
- 4 PM – 5 PM: Afternoon Rounds
- 5 PM – 8 PM: Complete pending work
On Tuesdays – all Fellows attend Conference from 7:30 AM to 9 AM.
ICU consults are seen as requested at any time.
