Internal Medicine Residency
Curriculum Overview
Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a major teaching hospital affiliated with New York Medical College, offering an ACGME and AOA Dual Accredited Internal Medicine residency. Currently, the program has 58 residents with 19 residents recruited each academic year. The hospital also offers residencies in anesthesiolgy and podiatry, as well as fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, infectious disease, pulmonary and critical care.
Over the course of three years our residents will receive comprehensive education in internal medicine through a combination of clinical work and didactic lectures. Our residents will rotate mainly in our primary site at Saint Michael’s in both the inpatient and outpatient centers and participate directly in patient care. Our program features a teaching-attending-based model which allows residents to form a strong relationship with the teaching attendings and various members of the healthcare team, including nurses, social workers, and case managers, to discuss the management of patients in the interdisciplinary rounds. In addition to the core rotations residents can also rotate in various subspecialties including:
- Cardiology
- Gastroenterology
- Hematology/Oncology
- Nephrology
- Pulmonary
- Infectious Disease
- Endocrinology
- Rheumatology
- Radiology
- Anesthesiology
- OB/GYN
- Neurology
- Geriatrics
- Emergency Medicine
- Psychiatry
In addition we have various outpatient private clinics in which residents in their second and third year can participate in order to develop a comprehensive view of urban and suburban outpatient medicine. Residents are also able to participate in electives at hospitals outside Saint Michael’s under the approval of the Program Director.
Education
The teaching component is a complement to the daily activities of the resident and they are offered in various departments under the leadership of several teaching faculty.
The residents all participate in Morning Report in which cases admitted in the previous 24 hours are discussed.
Every day there is a noon lecture that is either given by a teaching faculty member or is done by a resident under the supervision of a teaching faculty member.
Residents on the floors and night float are assigned a faculty member who discusses medical management on patient cases.
Residents in the ICU participate in daily teaching rounds under the supervision of the critical care attending to discuss medical management of the patients in the unit.
Board Review is provided for the residents at all levels and is done under the supervision of the chief and associate chief residents.
Monthly Mortality and Morbidity discussions are held to identify and analyze adverse outcomes associated with medical error to modify behavior and jugement based on previous experiences and to prevent repetition of errors leading to complications.
Monthly Tumor Board reviews are held to discuss complex patients with a diagnosis of cancer. Using a treatment planning approach, a number of doctors who are experts in different medical specialites review and discuss the medical condition and treatment options of a patient.
Monthly Journal Clubs are held to discuss new advances in medicine and to build the skills necessary to dissect and interpret medical literature.
A sample of our lecture series can be found here.
Continuity Clinic
While the majority of the residents’ time is spent in an inpatient setting at least one third of your clinical work will be spent in the outpatient setting. Outpatient medicine is a different discipline in which chronic issues become a bigger focus as well as addressing long term medical and social issues of our patients. It is here where residents learn to develop long-term relationships with their patients. Our clinic is a weekly clinic and is under the supervision of our primary care physicians Dr. Jayasingam, Dr. Sison and Dr. Seigel.
