Hematology/Oncology Fellowship
Welcome to the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at Saint Michaels Medical Center
Our three-year combined program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), prepares physicians for careers in academic or clinical hematology/oncology. Upon completion, fellows are eligible for board certification in both hematology and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

Program Overview
The Saint Michaels Medical Center Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship offers:
- Comprehensive training in the full spectrum of adult hematologic and oncologic disorders
- Expertise in benign hematology, hematologic and solid tumor malignancies, and palliative care
- In-depth knowledge of bone marrow transplantation and the underlying basic science of hematologic and oncologic diseases
- A diverse patient population in urban/suburban New Jersey
- State-of-the-art facilities including a renovated outpatient treatment center and dedicated inpatient unit
- The Blood Research Institute’s esteemed Nadine Brunini Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Center is one of only four in New Jersey to be federally and state funded and designated by the US Health resources and Services Administration and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau as a comprehensive center specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand disease, and other bleeding and clotting disorders.
Curriculum Highlights
- Inpatient rotations in oncology and hematology
- Outpatient clinic experience
- Radiation oncology rotation
- Bone marrow transplant rotation at partner institution
Second Year
- Advanced inpatient and outpatient responsibilities
- Elective rotations in blood bank, coagulation lab, flow cytometry, pathology, gynecologic oncology, and palliative/hospice care
Third Year
- Focused research time (minimum 3 months)
- Tailored electives to meet individual career goals
Clinical Experience
Fellows gain hands-on experience in:
- Inpatient and outpatient management of hematology and oncology patients
- Continuity clinics where fellows manage their own patients under faculty supervision
- Multidisciplinary tumor boards
- Bone marrow biopsies and other procedures
Research Opportunities
- Design and complete a research project during fellowship
- Participate in basic or clinical research under faculty guidance
- Monthly research meetings to discuss clinical trial designs and ongoing projects
